“It’s just like American Idol – but for buskers,” said PickOutVid.com spokesperson Bob Smith (not his real name). “We see it as a great opportunity, especially for buskers, who don’t get a lot of exposure.”
While this is the first year of Best Buskers in the World, PickOutVid.com has been around since 2004. The organization was founded by an anonymous group of buskers whose goal was to create more recognition and opportunities for street performers.
“Our mission is to educate people about what a great art form busking is,” said Smith. “Busking gets a bad reputation because there are so many people doing it and they’re not good, so people think that’s all there is.”
The idea of holding a worldwide competition came from one of the members who had previously been involved with another website called StreetPerformer.net which hosted busking videos. After seeing how much these videos were enjoyed, the team decided to create their own site dedicated solely to busking videos.
