Day in and day out, we are surrounded by music. Whether you are walking down the street, driving in traffic, shopping at the mall, or eating out at a restaurant, there is music to be heard. Sometimes it can feel like this music is being forced upon us.
But what if we chose to listen? What if we decided that some of this music was actually worth hearing?
Buskers Share Their Secrets Here!
Just what is busking? Busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. A busker may perform on the street, at a subway station, at a farmers market, in a park, or anywhere else there might be people who enjoy listening to music. Buskers also perform at private events such as birthday parties and weddings. Busking can include any live performance art not usually associated with formal venues such as restaurants and clubs. Musicians are most commonly associated with street performers but dancers, jugglers, comedians and storytellers also have their place in the world of busking.
A Brief History of Busking
In ancient Greece musicians would play for coins on street corners and in public squares. This tradition continued through medieval Europe where musicians played at markets and fairs for food and drink instead of money.
I have been busking for about 10 years. I have seen many changes in the streets, regulations, attitudes and public support.
I am also a teacher and musician. I like to share my knowledge with other buskers.
If you want to improve your street performance and increase your income, check out my courses and articles on this blog.
I will teach you how to be a better busker!
Busking is a fantastic way to make money. You get to perform in front of an audience, meet new people, and get paid for it! What’s not to love? There are a few things that will help you become a successful busker though.
Did you know that the word “busker” comes from the Spanish word “buscar” which means “to seek”? Buskers have been performing in the streets for centuries. Some historians believe that street performance has existed since ancient times. They believe that Greek actors traveled from town-to-town performing plays on carts!
Nowadays, busking is still very popular around the world. Let’s take a look at some of the best buskers in the world…
Busking can be a lucrative and fun way to make money.
But, it’s not all fun and games. There are many things that go into being a successful busker.
There is the guitar or piano, costumes, props and the ability to draw in a crowd that will actually want to listen.
Busking ability is also very subjective, which means you may do really well in one location or country, but not so well in another.
For example, my brother once went busking with his friends in Europe (they were on a backpacking trip). They played “Knocking on Heavens Door” by Bob Dylan on their guitars and made $30 in 10 minutes.
Compare this to when he was in the UK performing the same song at the same time of day and only made $0.30! His friend made more money but he did so by playing more upbeat songs like “Hey Jude” by The Beatles.
I think this would be a great idea as you could find out what buskers are working where and what they are doing to be successful. It would also encourage people to experiment with different styles, different songs and different locations in order to find out what works best for them.
As any busker will tell you, this is the golden age of street performing. Sure, it’s always been a good time to be a busker: free food, free drugs, free rent, and a bunch of money. But the past ten years have seen explosive growth in the field. Today, an aspiring street performer has resources his predecessors could only dream of: Busking classes at your local conservatory! A whole book on Busking! And dozens of websites with Busking tips and advice!
With all this newfound attention devoted to busking, it’s easy for young performers to feel like they’ve missed the boat. But that couldn’t be further from the truth; there’s still plenty of room for new performers! This website is dedicated to helping you get started.
