1.) Go to the touristy part of town
The first place to do when looking for street performers is to go where the tourists are. Most cities will have a downtown area dedicated to shopping and entertainment. This is a great place to start. Or if your city has one specific attraction that draws in tourists, you might try there as well. Lots of times street performers will set up shop near popular sites in order for people walking by to see their show. After all, they need an audience in order for tips to start rolling in!
2.) Check out the local farmers market
Another place that you can often find musicians and other types of performances is at your local farmers market. If you live in Austin, Texas for example, downtown is packed with food trailers and vendors during the day time on weekends. Street performers will often set up shop nearby so that they have an audience while they play

I used to have no idea how street performers make money. They don’t sell you anything. You just watch them and walk away. How do they make a living like that?
The first thing I learned is that it’s a lot more work than I thought. Street performers usually don’t stay in one place for more than an hour or two at a time, because if people are going to give you money for nothing, you have to keep moving before they realize it’s nothing.
So how does it work? When I was trying to figure this out, the best source was the book The Invisible Future by Peter J. Leggitt and Michael D’Antonio. The authors interviewed dozens of street performers, including present and former members of Cirque du Soleil, one of the biggest acts on earth.
Their conclusion: “For a street entertainer, every performance is a marketing opportunity.” Most of their income comes from repeat customers who see them once and then come back again and again when they’re in town.
