But one thing they haven’t been able to do is dance. That’s where we come in. We’re here to talk about how robots are changing though dance and what that means for us humans.
Robot Street Dance (RSD) was founded in 2011 with a simple mission: to be the best place for people learn about robotics from those who actually make them. Over time, our mission has evolved into something more than just education—it’s now become a place where anyone can discover how robots will change their lives and learn how to use these tools to create new solutions for existing problems or solve existing problems in novel ways.
Our goal is not only inform but also inspire people about robotics; we believe that by providing an outlet for these thoughts, we’ll be creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas without fear of being judged by others.

On the other hand, robots and artificial intelligence will enable us to redefine what it means to be human. They will free us from day-to-day drudgery, and allow us to focus on higher level tasks that require creativity and emotional intelligence.
Dancing is an important part of our humanity and culture. We use dance for communication, storytelling, recreation and self-expression. The first time I saw a robot dance, it was a preprogrammed routine with no input from the human dancer. It was a bit boring, to tell the truth.

It was reacting purely to movement – or rather, to changes in distance and angle between itself and the dancer. It was fascinating to watch the robot respond so quickly, so accurately and yet so unpredictably (to me).
This got me thinking about humans interacting with robots in the context of dance and movement: How does the presence of a robot change how we perform? Can dancers learn anything from robots? How do we choreograph for such interactions? What are the possibilities?
