To pick the right shirt collar size, it’s best to follow these steps:
1. Measure your throat with a tape measure. The measurement should be taken at the point where a dress shirt collar would normally sit, right above the Adams apple and below the fleshy part of your throat. This measurement is usually between 14-23 inches (36-58 cm).
2. Once you have found your neck size, refer to our chart above to determine which collar size will fit you best
There are three things to consider when considering your shirt collar size: the length between the sides, the size of your neck, and the type of shirt you want. The following collar sizing details will help you pick a collar that best suits your needs.
Length Between Sides
The distance between the sides should be measured from end to end with a tape measure. This measurement is called the “length.” Most dress shirts come with a specific length for each size of shirt. The standard length is around 15 inches or 38cm. It’s not uncommon to have a different length for a smaller or larger shirt but it’s always best to check first before buying one.
Neck Size Adjustment
To get an accurate fit, you must first determine your actual neck size. Measure your neck circumference with a tape measure by wrapping it around the base of your neck and taking note of where you’re measuring from. You should take this measurement from an area just below your Adam’s apple. If you don’t know where that is, simply find it by running your hand down the front of your throat until you can feel it there (it will likely look like a small bump).

Here are the instructions on how to find your shirt collar size:
1. Take a jacket or shirt that fits you well and collar style you like.
2. Lay it flat with the front facing up and smooth out the fabric with your hands.
3. Use a tape measure to determine the distance between the two edges of the collar band, rounding up to the nearest half inch.
4. The measurement you get is your collar size, rounded up to the nearest half inch.
For example, if you take a measurement of 16 inches (40 cm) then your collar size is 16 1/2″ (42cm).
If you are buying a dress shirt, you will need to know your collar size.
To find your shirt collar size, take a tape measure and wrap around the base of your neck.
Insert one or two fingers into the space between the tape and neck.
That’s it! You now know what size your collar is.
Collar sizes are measured in inches and vary from 13-17, with half sizes in between.
So if your measurement was 15″, that is a 15 1/2 collar.
Now that we have this, how do we know how to fit our collars?
A perfect fitting collar should allow two fingers to fit in the space between the neck and the collar when buttoned up tightly.
If you can only fit one finger in there, it’s too small; if three fingers fit, it’s too big.
The collar measurements are taken from the center of the button and buttonhole horizontally to the far end of the opposite buttonhole. You can find this measurement on your existing collars by measuring from the center of one button to the center of the other. If you are measuring a shirt that is already made, be sure to measure with your collar standing up and unbuttoned.
The sizes below are standard industry sizes. Some manufacturers may vary slightly from these measurements but you should generally find that all shirts you purchase from us will have similar dimensions for a given collar size.
If your neck size is on the cusp between two sizes, we recommend ordering the larger size as many people prefer their shirts less snug. We also offer collar inserts in 1/2″ increments if you need an exact fit.
