The term is used to describe vernacular dances in urban context. Vernacular dances are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. These dances were invented by people just like you!

Street dance is one of those things that makes you feel so alive. It’s just so liberating and enjoyable to let your body express itself through movement. A lot of people don’t understand how much hard work and dedication it takes to be a street dancer. There is a lot of hard training, rehearsal, and skill involved in becoming a street dancer which is why I love it. I actually have a very unique story about how I got my first job as a hip hop dancer. I was actually at my local grocery store buying some food for my daughter when I saw this man on the side of the road doing some amazing hip hop moves. His dancing was simply mind blowing!

The street dance industry is growing rapidly and with that comes new opportunities for dancers. Whether you are seeking work as an entertainment performer, a commercial dancer or even a choreographer there is now plenty of work to be found.

There are 3 main ways to find street dance jobs:

1. DANCE AGENCIES

2. AUDITIONS

3. CASTING CALLS

Dance agencies are great because they will find work for you which means you can focus on dancing and let the agency do the leg work. They have regular contact with clients in the entertainment industry who regularly hire dancers for events, tv shows and cruises etc so once you are signed up to an agency it is just a matter of waiting for that call to come in! Most agencies ask for professional photos, a showreel and CV when registering so make sure your marketing materials are up to date and look professional as they will be representing you and your brand.

Auditions are often used by casting companies and choreographers looking to fill a specific role within their upcoming project. The only way to hear about these auditions is through the grapevine so it pays to be connected with other dancers who know what’s going on in the industry. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook because

First things first: You need to know what kind of dancer you want to specialise in. This is crucial if you want to break into the industry, as it will determine what kind of work will suit you best and where you should start looking for jobs. Once you know what kind of field interests you most, create a show reel or portfolio to demonstrate your skills. You can do this by using a camera phone or getting your friends or family members to film your choreography or freestyle session (I would advise having someone film from the side rather than straight on). This will give anyone viewing an idea of your skill level and style.
