Main Street Theater is excited to welcome the winter season with a new production of The Full Monty, a hilarious and heartwarming musical comedy by Tony Award-winning Terrence McNally (Ragtime) and David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Band’s Visit).

Based on the 1997 film, The Full Monty tells the story of a group of unemployed Buffalo steelworkers who are desperate to make some quick cash. Left with few marketable skills besides their bodies, they decide to present a strip act at a local club after seeing their wives’ enthusiasm for a touring company of Chippendales. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness and anxieties, they find strength in their camaraderie. Filled with honest affection, engaging melodies and the most highly anticipated closing number of any show, The Full Monty will prove that it is indeed “Better to be King for a Night than Schmucks for Life!

Main Street Theater (MST) is welcoming the winter season with a big show: “The Full Monty.” This musical comedy is based on the 1997 British film of the same name, and it premiered on Broadway in 2000. “The Full Monty” was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Direction of a Musical.

The musical opens with Jerry Lukowski, a desperate man who has just lost his job at the steel mill in Buffalo, New York. He is struggling to support himself and his young son Nathan. After seeing their wives’ enthusiasm for a Chippendales-style male revue that comes through town, Jerry and his friends get inspired to put together their own strip act. The only difference is that they will go one step further — all the way.

The Main Street Theater is the place to be this winter. The theater will be hosting the hilarious musical “The Full Monty” starting this November. The show centers around six unemployed steelworkers who decide to become male strippers in order to make ends meet.

The show is based on the 1997 British film of the same name, and has a book by Terrence McNally and music and lyrics by David Yazbek. With an interesting mix of both funny and dramatic moments, “The Full Monty” is sure to warm up the audience on a cold winter’s night.

This show will be directed by Bruce Lumpkin, who is no stranger to the Main Street Theater. He has directed 14 shows at the theater over his course 12-year career with them. In addition to directing, Lumpkin also serves as the theater’s artistic director.

With its focus on real-life situations and characters, Lumpkin said he feels that “The Full Monty” makes for a great choice for this time of year, when people may be struggling with money and looking for ways to make ends meet.

This musical adaptation premiered in 2000 at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre and then transferred to Broadway where it opened in April 2000, running for over a year. It was nominated for nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, winning two: Best Score and Best Book of a Musical. The Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey produced a highly acclaimed production of The Full Monty in 2011 that transferred to Broadway.

Main Street Theater is pleased to announce its winter production, THE FULL MONTY, directed by Main Street’s Producing Director Rebecca Greene Udden. This crowd-pleasing comedy will play November 16 – December 23 at Main Street Theater – Rice Village (2540 Times Blvd.). Performances are Tuesdays at 7:30 pm; Wednesdays at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm; Thursdays at 7:30pm; Fridays at 8:00pm; Saturdays at 2:00pm and 8:00pm; and Sundays at 3:00pm. There are no performances on Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve.

The Full Monty will feature a cast of local favorites including Richard Cubbage, Chadwick Smith, Tyler Weaver, Jr., John Gremillion, L. Jay Meyer, Lance De Los Santos, Robert Meek and Debra Wagoner. The show is under the musical direction of Sarah Hakki with choreography by Marlisa Hahn Zayac.

This season’s set design is by Kevin Rigdon with costume design by Jason A. Sherwood, lighting design by Michael Sullivan and sound design by Elan McMahan. The production stage manager is Casey Stephens and the assistant stage manager is Mia Moore.
