OPEN HOUSE: A BLOG ABOUT USING YOUR SKILLS TO START A CAREER IN THE ARTS
ACTING
Posting Date: October 26th, 2015
Acting is a highly competitive field, but there are many job opportunities available. You can be a performer on stage and screen, or you can take a more behind-the-scenes approach as a director or producer. To become an actor, you’ll need to be able to express yourself artistically and emotionally. You’ll also need to get experience acting in front of others and audition for roles.
As a young actor in Hollywood, I was always looking for ways to improve myself and my craft. I was lucky enough to have access to coaches and mentors that helped me with my monologues, scenes, and auditions. However, there were many times when I found myself stuck at home or out of town without any resources. At these times I would look to the internet for guidance.
Through these searches, I found that there are many websites out there that offer tips and advice on how to be a better actor, singer, or dancer. But few of them offered anything more than the basics. So, after careful consideration, I decided to start my own blog. My goal is to help aspiring young actors, singers, and dancers with their journey into the performing arts by providing articles on topics like auditioning, preparing for a performance and finding your niche in this industry.
I hope you will find this blog useful. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at any time! Thank you so much for reading!

I was talking to a friend I hadn’t seen in a while the other day. She’s finishing her first year of college and we were catching up on how things were going. We were discussing her love for theatre and the arts in general when she made a statement that surprised me. She said, “I want to be an actress but I don’t think I am good enough.” Now, my friend is a very talented woman who has been acting since middle school; she’s always known she wanted to work in theatre and perform as much as possible. But here she was, doubting herself and her abilities because of what others had told her.
As a performer myself, I have heard this line many times from friends, family members, and even strangers over the years. People who know me well have asked why I would put so much time and effort into something that may never pay off with a steady job or income. My answer has always been that it’s what I love to do more than anything else in this world; I will always choose performing over anything else no matter what the consequences may be.
The problem with this response is that it doesn’t really address the issue of doubt. When people ask you why you’re struggling so hard against all odds when you
