I have been a street performer for nearly twenty years. It has taken me to many places around the world, given me a chance to meet some amazing people and perform some amazing music. I have made my living from performing on the streets, in restaurants and cafes, and at public events. This is what I want to share with you in this blog.
Street performers are becoming more popular around the world, especially in the United States. They are the people that bring music, dance, comedy, theater, acrobatics and art to our cities and towns. They bring entertainment to people who would otherwise not have it.
In this blog I will give you tips for where to go, what to do and how to get started as a street performer. I want this blog to be a place where we can learn from each other and grow together as artists!
Street performers are a unique breed of people: brave, talented, and willing to put themselves out there for the sake of an audience. If you have ever thought about becoming a street performer, you should know that it is not for everyone. Street performing requires a lot more than just talent and practice. It requires putting up with the elements, rejection, heckling, rudeness and sometimes even arrest.
Of course, if you can deal with all of those things, then street performing can be a very rewarding experience. Not only will you make some money (hopefully), but you will gain experience being in front of an audience and you might even get discovered by some big-shot talent agent who will whisk you away to Hollywood to be a star! (Okay fine — this last one is highly unlikely. But hey, who knows?)
Of course, if street performing is not something that sounds like fun to you, but you still want to support live musicians or other types of street performers (like mimes or magicians), then here are some tips for knowing what and how much to tip.
Street performers are very common in major cities all over the world. In the U.S., the most famous street performers are probably those in and around New York City’s Washington Square Park, but you can find talented buskers all over the country, from Los Angeles to Asheville, North Carolina, and everywhere in between.
If you’re thinking about becoming a busker yourself, here are some tips for how to get started and make your mark on the world of street performance.
Street performers such as musicians, magicians and acrobats are a great source of entertainment for many. But not all street performers are created equal. Some locations, crowds and acts just seem to fit better than others. Here are some tips from a street performer who has traveled to hundreds of cities around the world over the last decade, playing music in a wide variety of venues and situations.
The first tip is to find a location where tourists often congregate. Large tourist destinations offer the most potential for exposure to people with the most money to spend on street performers. Cities such as New York, San Francisco, London, Barcelona and Sydney have areas that attract large numbers of tourists throughout the year. Often these areas can be found near popular attractions such as museums or landmarks. Keep in mind that your location should not be somewhere you will get into trouble with authorities or interfere with traffic flow or pedestrian walkways.
Next, it is important to find out what kind of crowd you will be performing for on any given day. The best time to perform is when there is a large crowd of people passing by so that more people can enjoy your performance and also have an opportunity to contribute some coins in appreciation for your efforts…
The first thing you should do is to find out where street performing is legal. Some places you can perform and some places you can’t. It is important to find out before you start performing. You don’t want to be arrested for unlawful activity or get a ticket or fine.
The second thing you should do is choose a place to perform. This means choosing a location that will attract the most people and hopefully make the most money. You can think about it this way – how many people will walk by in one hour? The more people that walk by, the more tips you will make because there are more people to give tips!
Thirdly, once you have chosen a spot to perform, decide what you are going to perform. Are you going to juggle, act or sing? What type of music are you going to play? Thinking about these things beforehand will help your performance go much better!
Finally, play! Play as long and as often as possible! The more times you play in public, the better your performance will be. And if your performance is good enough, you can earn your living doing it!
You don’t need a stage to make your mark on the music world. Busking, or street performing, is an art in itself.
The first step to becoming a street performer is figuring out where you want to play. In New York City, hanging out on a subway platform and playing an instrument may land you more than spare change. Other major cities like Atlanta and Los Angeles also offer busking scenes for musicians. Don’t forget about college campuses and farmers markets, which may be friendlier venues to try out your music in front of a live audience.
Once you’ve picked your spot, you’ll need to get the right paperwork. Most big cities require performers to obtain a permit before they can start playing in public areas. Permits are often free or very low-cost, but they vary with each city. Here’s what you need to know before heading out into the streets with your guitar:
A street performer or busker is a person who provides a public performance in a public place for gratuities. The term busking was first noted in the English language around the middle 1860s in Great Britain. It is also thought to be a derivation of the Spanish word buscar, which means “to seek”
Street performers can include:
• Acrobats
• Jugglers
• Magicians
• Musicians
• Poets
• Dancers and other physical performers
• Singers and other vocalists.
