It is that time of year again when the sun is shining, flowers are in bloom and street artists are starting to make their way to the streets. I started my life as a street artist when I was in my teens, after getting a guitar for my 13th birthday. My first performances were on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral in London. For me it was an amazing experience; the sound of a guitar in the cathedral created a beautiful resonance, and playing music for people was just what I wanted to do for a living.
My aim here is to share with you my experience and tips on how to become a successful busker. Hopefully these tips will help you turn your passion into money!
1. Choose The Right Location
The most important thing you can do to become a successful street performer is to choose the right location. There are many factors that make up a great location:
a. Visibility: Make sure you are visible! People need to be able to see you so they can stop and listen. You should also be visible from far away, so passers-by have time to stop before they reach you.

If you want to make more money, you need to give people something they can’t get anywhere else. Nobody wants to hear a cover of someone else’s song that they can already hear on the radio.
2. People want something unique and interesting. The higher the quality of your performance, the more likely you are to get tips from each audience member. The more tips you make, the better your chances of making money on the street will be!
3. Don’t be afraid of being a little cocky when it comes time for passers-by to throw some change into your hat or cup!
4. Make sure that your hat or cup is placed in an easy-to-reach spot for potential tip givers and that there are no obstacles between them and their ability to give you money if they so choose!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I took a break from busking to get my Master’s degree and moved to wonderful Scotland for a year, but I’m back in NYC now and have recently started playing on the street again.
