Sometimes you see a busking magician who is good-looking, charming and funny, but his tricks are all bad. And when I say bad, I mean they can be spotted almost instantly. And he is doing them poorly.
Sometimes you see a busking magician who is so technically perfect that he can fool you on every trick, even when you know how the tricks are done. But he is not charming or funny, or good-looking or stylish, so no one cares.
Very rarely, you will see a busking magician who has it all: He is technically flawless and charming and funny as hell. If you’ve seen Chris Angel on television, then you know what I’m talking about.
I am not Chris Angel.
But I did spend a few years performing at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA, where I learned from some of the best magicians in Los Angeles. In this blog post, I will share with you my top 5 magic tricks that I learned during my time there:
The unique thing about my show is that I’m “busking” on the streets of Los Angeles. A lot of people don’t know what the term means, so to clarify I am playing music on the street for donations. In addition to music, I also perform magic tricks which results in an interactive environment with the audience.
The style of busking is very different than a magic show at a party. The attention span of an audience member is a lot less and you have to hit them with your best material right away! There is no room for a slow build-up because they can just walk away at any time.
Busking has taught me how to engage with an audience in a very short amount of time. It has also made me more confident in my magic skills because I have done it almost every day for the past 2 years. This post will outline the top 5 tricks that I have learned at Hollywood’s Magic Castle which has helped me increase my tips as a street performer.
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Steven Brundage. I’m a magician from upstate New York and I’ve been performing magic for over 10 years now!
I’ve had the opportunity to perform all over the world, including the Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA. The Magic Castle is an exclusive members-only club that has shows almost every night of the week. The most prestigious honor you can receive as a magician is to be asked to give one of these performances.
My favorite part about being a magician (besides getting paid!) is seeing how people react to my tricks. Magic has a way of bringing people together and connecting them in a way that nothing else can do!
So when I was asked to perform at the Magic Castle in downtown Los Angeles for their “Best Of” show, I jumped at the chance. This would be my first time performing in front of an audience that was not just tourists or friends from college – this would be real magicians!
I knew it was going to be tough because everyone loves magic, but it’s really hard to impress a room full of magicians. But after performing my act twice during their “Best Of” show last week, they asked me back again this weekend!
As a magician, I’m often asked by friends and family to teach them “tricks” that they can use to impress their friends. Because of this, I decided to create a blog as a way to document my top 5 best and easiest tricks that you can learn! The tricks in this blog are not meant for professional magicians but rather for those who just want to impress their friends.
The Magic Castle is a private club in Hollywood and one of the most prestigious places to see magic in the world. It’s also where I learned to perform my own magic as a busking magician in Los Angeles.
1. To be a great magician, you have to be a great performer.
This is what I noticed about all the magicians performing at the Magic Castle. They had amazing stage presence, which made me think that I needed to improve my own presence as a performer.
2. The best magicians have their own unique style.
The performers at the Magic Castle all had their own unique style. Some were hilarious, some were mysterious and some were serious, but they all had their own thing going on that made them stand out from other magicians.
3. Practice makes perfect, even for magic tricks!
The performers at the Magic Castle all worked hard and practiced their magic tricks every day to make them amazing for audiences. Of course there’s a lot of practice that goes into making your magic tricks look effortless!
4. The best magicians are always learning new tricks and honing their skills to re-invent themselves as performers!
Every magician was learning new tricks and re-inventing their show every week or
The Magic Castle is a place where professional magicians and amateur magic enthusiasts go to play, practice, and learn together. It’s been around since 1963, and it’s where I’ve spent nearly every Monday night for the past 4 years.
The first time I went to the Magic Castle, I was completely starstruck by what I saw: the best magicians in the world were hanging out, performing, and teaching each other.
I’d only ever been to cheesy magic shows in middle-of-nowhere towns where the magician was lucky if he got a round of polite applause after a mediocre show. The Magic Castle showed me what magic could be: an art form, not a cheap entertainment for bored tourists.
One of my favorite things about the Magic Castle is that there’s no distinction between pro magicians and amateurs. Everyone is learning from each other. If you’re doing something amazing with cards or coins or mentalism, people are going to stop you on your way to dinner and ask you to show them what you do.
That’s one of the reasons why I’ve learned so much at the Magic Castle: everyone wants to talk about magic!
When I first started busking, one of my goals was to make it into the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California. A private club for magicians and magic enthusiasts, the Magic Castle is the kind of institution that’s steeped in tradition and lore.
I had heard from other street performers that I would have to be “discovered” by a magician who frequented the Castle and that I’d need my own business card with my act on it if I wanted to perform there.
Because I didn’t know any magicians at the time, this all seemed like a pipe dream. But after two years of performing on the street and in bars, I finally found a regular gig at a bar in downtown Los Angeles, which led to me being introduced to some magicians.
A few months later, while drinking with a magician at a bar in Hollywood, he offered to pay my entrance fee into the Castle if I showed him some tricks after our night of drinking was over.
I thought “why not?” and agreed to meet him there later that night. He signed me in as his guest and we entered the building.
