The MTA wants to shut down Times Square to buses and traffic for a special performance by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson.
The New York Post reports that the two are planning an “uptown funk” busking session on Sunday, Sept. 20, from noon to 2 p.m., complete with dancing and singing.
The band is reportedly planning to perform in front of the Red Steps at Duffy Square (at 47th Street and Seventh Avenue). The MTA is set to close Broadway between 47th Street and 49th Street, as well as Seventh Avenue between 46th Street and 48th Street.
The plan also calls for some restrictions on vehicle access to West 48th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue, according to the Post.
In addition, the performers will likely have their own stage set up in front of the Red Steps, as well as on nearby streets.
While it might sound like an odd location for a performance, it’s actually an ideal spot: The Red Steps overlooks Times Square during rush hour, when thousands of people make their way along the sidewalks to work or school.
While some might be skeptical about how long a performance can last in such a crowded area – especially if
The Uptown Funk Buskers will be shutting down Times Square this weekend.
The band, a collection of musicians from New York City, is the latest addition to an expanding list of busking groups around the world. This week, it will perform in New York’s iconic tourist district, on Saturday and Sunday.
“We want to shut down Times Square,” band members said in a statement. “It’s a great place for us to play.”
The group is led by Alex Soto, who plays the saxophone and guitar, with his brother Chris on bass and drums. The band features other local musicians as well as students from local schools.
In addition to the performances in Times Square, the band will also perform at Lincoln Center on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET. They will then head over to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park to perform at 10 p.m., followed by a set at Central Park’s Lincoln Center at 11:30 p.m.
The city received a permit to shut down Times Square this weekend, but it’s not because of another protest.
It’s because the city wants to make room for the Uptown Funk busking performance.
The Uptown Funk busker has become an internet sensation after a video of her singing the hit song in Times Square went viral.
She was identified as 28-year-old Maria Aragon, and she has been invited to perform on stage with Bruno Mars at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Tuesday night.
“When I saw her video, it just blew me away,” said Mars. “I turned around to my manager and said, ‘We have to do something.’ And he said, ‘Bruno, I already got you guys a show.'”
Mars said he couldn’t believe what he was hearing from his manager. He didn’t think they were actually going to get Aragon to perform on stage with them.
The people who live in cities have generally developed a high tolerance for unusual public behavior, but if you wish to grab the attention of the average city dweller, street busking is still one of the most effective means of doing so. In fact, if you’re going to be a street performer and make money off of your talent, you might as well do something that will go viral – as that is often how you can make some cash.
We’ve all seen our fair share of street performers, from Michael Jackson impersonators to Michael Jackson impersonators in a chicken suit. But this week we saw something different on Broadway: A group of buskers performing “Uptown Funk”.
The group was comprised of four men wearing leather jackets, sunglasses and fedoras while they sang and danced along to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit song. They had an audience of dozens watching them perform at their makeshift stage – an old speaker box with a microphone attached to it. The crowd cheered them on as they finished their performance with even more energy than when they started! It was all caught on video for your enjoyment below!
We were able to find out about the group thanks to Reddit user “tritone”. He told us he took this video while visiting New York
This weekend, the Times Square Alliance is shutting down the streets to cars and turning it into a giant playground for all. It’s called “Summer Streets” and it’s always a good time! This year, we’re excited to announce that we will be performing on the SELF-MADE STAGE on Saturday, August 13th from 12-1 pm as part of “BuskerFest!”
What is BuskerFest? It’s an incredible line up of performance artists who will be entertaining at various locations throughout the day.
The best part? It’s FREE, open to the public, and will be held in beautiful Central Park.
We hope to see you there!
The Times Square Alliance is about to shut down the commercial center of Manhattan for what appears to be no good reason. The organization, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, announced yesterday that from noon to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday, street performers will be confined to two designated areas in the pedestrian plaza.
